Our Story: The Spark of SOZO Evolution
When I was 16, a high school freshman in Japan, I wrote an essay for a school assignment. I don’t remember the exact content, but it explored the word SOZO—a Japanese word that means imagination (想像) and/or creation (創造), depending on the characters used.
Unbeknownst to us, the school submitted all our essays to a national competition. One day, our teacher announced that one of us had won first place. I was stunned when he called my name. Even more surprising was the prize—an all-expenses-paid trip to the United States for a week!
The competition recognized six high school students across Japan—three in the writing category and three in illustration. We met for the first time at the award ceremony, and from there, we were off to the airport. It was my first time leaving Japan, and suddenly, I found myself in a foreign country, navigating a world of uncertainty, discovery, and possibility with five students I had just met. That journey—born out of my exploration of SOZO, imagination, and creation—changed the trajectory of my life.
This transformative experience taught me that great things happen when we step into the unknown with courage, curiosity, and imagination. It planted the seed for a lifelong journey of exploring how we can reimagine what’s possible—not just for ourselves, but for the systems and communities we are part of.
